Japanese Chin were bred as lap dogs. Their coats are long and silky, coming in black and white, red and white, or black and tan and white. They are actually of ancient Chinese origin, probably sharing a close link with the Pekingese.
*
These are devoted pups that are playful and sensitive, tending to shadow their owners and becoming friends with virtually everyone they meet! They only need a short walk or romp daily, but their long coat needs combing twice weekly.
*
Health concerns include patellar luxation, dry eye and cataracts.

Maltese were bred to be lap dogs and did originate in the island of Malta. Their coat is long and silky, coming only in white, though they originally came in colours other than white early on (they are mentioned in writings as early as 300 B.C.).
*
Maltese are bold and feisty dogs that are playful and sweet. They are reserved with strangers and sometimes bark a lot. They only need a short walk or romp every day, but their coat needs combing every 1-2 days (or clipped for easier care).
*
Health concerns include patellar luxation, hydrocephalus, liver shunt, dental problems and eyelid problems.

Toy Manchester Terriers come from England and where originally meant for hunting small rodents. Their coats are short and sleek, coming in black and tan, with a black "thumbprint" patch on the front of each foreleg and "pencil marks" on the top of each toe.
*
These are sensitive dogs that are playful with family but timid with strangers. They can also be tough when needed. They only need a short walk or good romp daily. Coat care is minimal.
*
Health concerns include vWD and cardiomyopathy.

Miniature Pinschers originate in Germany and were originally bred to hunt small vermin. Their coat is short and sleek, coming in clear red, stag red, and black and tan.
*
These are energetic pups that are busy and brash! They can also be stubborn and independent, even scrappy with other dogs and reserved with strangers. They need a moderate walk and several play sessions a day. The coat is virtually carefree.
*
Health concerns include Legg-Perthes, patellar luxation, heart defects, and mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS - a rare group of genetic disorders that cause physical deformities and organ dysfunction).
Picture
Papillon come from France originally, always having been intended as lap dogs. Their coat is long and silky, coming in white with patches of any colour. They have routes in the dwarf spaniels that were popular in Europe around the 16th century.
*
Papillon are obedient, among the most trainable of dogs and tend to be friendly towards everyone. They need a short walk plus several play or learning sessions daily. The coat needs brushing twice a week.
*
Health concerns include patellar luxation, seizures and dental problems.

Pekingese originate in China as lap dogs. They have a double coat with a coarse outer coat and soft undercoat. They come in all colours and patterns.
*
This breed owes its existence to the Foo dogs or "lion dogs" (one of which was presented to Queen Victoria in the 1860s) These are courageous pups that are aloof and independent, devoted to family but not demonstrative, and they can be stubborn. They need a very short walk daily, do not tolerate heat, and their coat will mat unless combed weekly at the very least. Their over-nose wrinkle should be cleaned daily in order to avoid infection.
*
Health concerns include brachycephalic syndrome, dry eye and patellar luxation.

Pomeranian originate in Germany as a companion animal. They have a double coat with a soft undercoat and long, harsh outer coat. They come in all colours and patterns.
*
This is the smallest member of the Spitz family. They are bouncy and bold—busy and attentive. Some can be aggressive to other dogs and some bark a lot. They need a very short walk or several short romps daily. The double coat needs brushing twice a week (and more when shedding).

Toy Poodles originate in Central Europe and were always lap dogs. Their coat is curly, harsh and long coming in any solid colour. This was a talented water-hunting companion before becoming a more elegant companion to fashionable women.
*
Toy Poodles are pert and peppy and are among the easiest dogs to train, as they are alert and responsive, as well as eager to please. They may bark a lot, however. Poodles need a short walk or good romp every day. The coat should be combed every 1-2 days and clipping should be done at least four times a year (face and feet clipped monthly).
*
Health concerns include PRA, patellar luxation, Legg-Perthes, epilepsy and eyelid problems.

Pugs come from China and were always lap dogs. Their coats are short and smooth, coming in silver, apricot-fawn, or black, with black muzzle or mask, ears, cheek moles and trace down back.
*
Pugs are a strange blend of dignity and comedy. They can be stubborn, but are generally willing to please. They need a short to moderate walk or a good play session daily. They don't tolerate heat, and they wheeze and snore. They need minimal coat care but need daily cleaning of their facial wrinkles.
*
Health concerns include Brachycephalic syndrome, Pug dog encephalitis, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, Legg-Perthes and entropion.
Picture
Shih Tzus areas of origin are China and Tibet (again, these are lap dogs). Their coats are long and silky, coming in any colour. Shih Tzu means "lion dog," designating them as one of the most esteemed animals in China because of its association with Buddhism (like the Pekingese).
*
Shih Tzu are spunky and week, vivacious and affectionate, but they can be stubborn. They need a short walk or good play session daily. Their luxurious coat needs brushing every other day and pets (non-show dogs) may be clipped.
*

Silky Terrier originates in Australia as a companion and small vermin hunter. They have long, silky coats that come in only blue and tan. Yorkshire Terriers were bred with native Blue and Tan Australian Terriers in the late 1800s.
*

*
Health concerns include patellar luxation and Legg-Perthes.
