FAQ #9: The Many Ways Massage Therapy Helps Geriatric Dogs and Cats

4/21/2020

Any dog or cat (and other animals) of any size, age, breed or activity level can benefit from massage, but senior pets benefit especially. Why is this? Let's consider all the ways massage therapy supports overall health, because it usually counts two-fold when it comes to senior pets:
  • Massage increases the blood supply to muscles, bringing much needed oxygen and nutrients to the muscle tissues. Supporting this basic function becomes even more important as a pet ages.
  • Massage strokes can help prevent lesions as well as loosening and stretching muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  Massage helps increase range of motion, allowing more free movement and gained strength.  As well, increased muscle tone equals increased elasticity. As a pet ages, the probability of joint issues, including arthritis increases. Massage becomes not only a preventive measure but a method of relieving pain caused by muscle spasm and tightness in tendons and ligaments.
  • Massage also prevents muscle atrophy in inactive, compensating muscles--an issue many older dogs and cats face.  Nourished joints are also well lubricated joints, which helps to maintain or increase range of motion.  Massage improves circulation overall, affecting the flow of blood, encouraging veins to carry away waste products, and arteries to carry a steady flow of oxygen and nutrients to keep cells healthy.
  • Lymphatic circulation is also increased by massage, draining lymph fluid into glands where it can be cleansed of toxins. The boost massage gives to the circulatory system can be extra helpful to senior pets, but contraindications must also be considered, as aged pets are more likely to suffer heart-related conditions and possibly cancer (though light massage therapy can often still be performed, providing relief to superficial muscles).
  • Massage improves lung conditions by increasing the flow of blood (and therefore, the flow of oxygen, assisting the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide).

Beetle is extremely social and very friendly, loves attention and is not afraid to come looking for kisses and cuddles.

A little shy at first with strangers, but easily won over with treats or a scratch behind the ears.

Beetle amuses himself during the day and loves watching the small humans play outside the window. He has a wonderful temperament, is calm, sweet and gentle.

Beetle especially loves his food and will wait patiently at his feeding mat when dinner time approaches. He's a big fluffy cat (but tries desperately to fit into the tiniest boxes).

Beetle would like you to know that he has lymphoma, a slow growing intestinal cancer. It may sound scary, but with medication the cancer is kept at bay and will allow him to live happily and comfortably for many years. Beetle takes his medication like a champ and doesn't let his condition slow him down one bit.

Beetle will quickly become a fantastic addition to any family. He has lots of life yet to live and tons of love to give.
-------------------
Beetle is neutered, microchipped and up to date on his vaccinations.

Misty, from the Annex Cat Rescue

Meet Misty

Misty can be timid with people but has made a lot of progress this year. She's gone from hiding under the bed all the time to hanging out on the window sill looking outside or sitting in a chair watching her fosterer over the edge of the table like a little cat dinner guest.

She's letting people get closer and closer and is learning to accept and even sometimes seems to enjoy being petted. She also loves following her foster dad around while he does chores, chatting away with meows!

She's really cute, her fur is super dense and soft, and if you can be patient with her maybe you can draw her out more! In fact, Misty will now eat her dinner out of anyone's hand when it's dinnertime, even a stranger! In fact, while she's not about to get in a stranger's lap, she'll perch on a chair or wander the apartment while guests are over, and quiet, patient guests have a pretty good shot at petting her :)

Last winter she was diagnosed with feline leukemia and heart disease and got all her teeth removed. She doesn't currently need any day to day health care though, the heart disease hasn't progressed, and she eats both wet and dry food happily (though a bit messily).

Mostly her toothlessness just makes her extra cute because her tongue sticks out sometimes. Her litter box manners are perfect and she doesn't scratch much besides her scratching post and pad.

Misty would prefer to be the only cat in the home and has not been tested with dogs.

I’m proud to announce that a guest blog that I co-wrote with Dr. Jane Berg, BSc., M.S.T.E.P., D.V.M. has been published on Innovative Veterinary Care Journal! It’s called Communication: the key to implementing massage therapy treatment, and in it, we discuss how communication between veterinarians and a canine (and feline) massage therapist can ensure a safe treatment plan for their mutual clients.
