FAQ #8: Intro to Reiki, what is it and how can it support my pet's health?

In the coming weeks, I will be posting interview style video chats between myself and (human) Reiki practitioner, Heather Lacey. We will talk about how Reiki works and what to expect (for humans and for animals). Specifically, we will discuss the different approaches in how Reiki is channeled to animals vs. humans (in the first blog post), then we talk more about how Distance Reiki works (in the second post). In the mean time, here is a brief introductory post:

Reiki means "universal life force energy" and refers to the safe, non-invasive channeling of energy to heal, as it is a therapy allowing animals (and people) to absorb more life-force energy.

Reiki is another treatment I offer in addition to Pet Massage Therapy. Reiki can help your pet in many different ways…

Anxiety, or relief from stress and/or fear is one of the main things people ask me about when enquiring about how Reiki can help their fur baby.

Distance Reiki is particularly useful, in that I don’t even need to be physically present in your home while your animal receives treatment. Think of it as a radio broadcast, with your pet receiving the energy signal (if they so choose).

FAQ #7: Hydrotherapy

Do you and your vet think your dog's health could benefit from the application of a cold wrap to cool, invigorate and stimulate; or from the application of a hot wrap to warm and relax tissues, act to detoxify by opening the pores of the skin, and draw up the blood? Or perhaps even cold and hot applications to stimulate the cardiovascular system?

You might find this simple method of administering hydrotherapy wraps to your dog helpful in these cases.

Hydrotherapy is the scientific application of water in the treatment of disease.

There are several different types of hydrotherapy methods, but the one I use, hydrotherapy wraps, involves:

1 to 2 five gallon buckets, depending on the type of wrap you want for your dog (hot or cold wraps only require one bucket, contrast wraps require two)
1 cup of Epsom salt (for hot or cold wraps), and 1 cup of Sea salt (for the second contrast wrap bucket, though Epsom will work if you can't get your hands on Sea salt)
a piece of fleece or wool (or two pieces, in the case of contrast wraps - one for each bucket) that is large enough to drape over your dog's entire body, or the portion of your dog's body you wish to treat.

WARNING: Be sure to discuss with your vet and/or canine massage therapist whether a wrap is right for your dog, as well as what kind of wrap your dog should receive based on their symptoms.

This method of using wraps, rather than a tub filled with water, is a little less messy and certainly less wet for your dog, and for dogs that dislike or are anxious about baths, this is much more tolerable.

Check out the video I created, if you're interested in trying hydrotherapy wraps on your dog at home (with your vet's blessing— you'll want to determine if this kind of therapy is right for your dog, the frequency of these sessions, as well as which type of wrap will be most beneficial to your dog.

From Tails of Istanbul, we have...
TWO BONDED BABIES
Can anyone give them a home?
KAVUN & KARPUZ have had a long wait - finding a home and then being abandoned when the owner's circumstances changed.
This beautiful duo is about 1 year and 3 months old.
They are very friendly and sweet and they have all the necessary vaccinations and both are sterilized.
After getting used to a home environment, they are currently in a pension in Istanbul with many other cats 💔
Let's get these two a home in Canada!

Val from Tails of Istanbul is still available!

Valentine, currently staying with the fine folks of Tails from Istanbul, is still searching for her perfect match.

You may remember Valentine was one of the available pups featured on my 12 Adoptable Pets of the Holiday Season series - she was Day 5. I also posted about her on Valentine's Day.

Is this beautiful lady your perfect match? Let's find this sweet, strong girl a home in Canada!

Valentine is the mum to 5 pups that were rescued from an abandoned, crumbling building last February. Almost all of her babies have been homed - 2 in Istanbul, 1 went to Toronto (another is set to go to Toronto but is too sick to travel at the moment), and 1 to Sweden.
Valentine is still waiting for her forever family at a pension in Istanbul.
She is approximately 4 years old.
Healthy, spayed and received all vaccines.
Val gets along very well with other dogs!

Ziggy's First Massage!

I still hope to post Holly the Shih Tzu's first massage, pretty much from beginning, right to the end of her very first appointment...but in the mean time...

As I discussed in Parts 3 & 4 of my What's Involved in K9 Massage blog series, I first assessed Ziggy's stance by having him stand stacked on the floor on all fours…I reviewed his “posture” from the front, back and side at their level. Then I assessed his gait. I watched Ziggy walk, then jog away and towards me, and then from the side, again, at his level (on the floor). Then I palpated Ziggy - stroking down from the base of the skull (about an inch or so away from the spine) to the base of his tail, then raked (splayed fingers) down through his hips/haunches, then barrel, then shoulders/arms — all this first on one side, then the other. In doing this, I’m feeling for temperature, muscle tone, and sensitivity.
