July is Lost Pet Prevention Month

From the Toronto Humane Society website (events page):  July is Lost Pet Prevention Month! Do you know what to do to increase the chances of finding your pet should they accidently slip through the front door?

A microchip is not a tracking device but it does store information on it that is vital in returning found pets home to their owners. Microchips carry a unique number that is associated to the owners account with contact information. This way, if your pet happens to be one of the many who slip through the front door, is found, vet clinics and animal shelters (or anyone who has a microchip scanner) can contact the microchip company, who will then notify the owners of the found pet. Microchip scanners only display the unique account number not address, name or phone number of the owners. This protects the privacy of the owner of the missing pet.

The Toronto Humane Society does offer the Microchipping appointments for a low cost of $45 (including the exam fee). Because we see on a first hand basis, the number of animals that come into our care without identification, we microchip all cats, dogs and rabbits prior to adoption.
